Flag: The German flag design consists of three equal stripes, beginning with a stripe of black at the top, followed by a red stripe red in the middle and a gold stripe at the bottom. The origins of the German flag—especially its black, red and gold colors—hold deep historical significance because they can be traced back to the medieval banner of the Holy Roman Empire: a black eagle with red claws and a golden beak.
