The US flag has 13 equal horizontal stripes of red alternating with white to honor the 13 original colonies and a blue rectangle in the upper left corner bearing 50 stars—one for each state.

The colors of the flag symbolize some of the fundamental principles shared by Americans throughout history:

  • Blue: Loyalty, devotion, truth, justice, friendship
  • Red: Courage, zeal, fervency
  • White: Purity, rectitude of conduct
