Flag Facts: Ireland

Population: 4,952,473

Capital: Dublin

Government: Parliamentary republic

National Holiday: Saint Patrick's Day – 17 March

National Symbol: The shamrock (trefoil)

The Irish flag features three equal vertical bands of green, white, and orange. The colors have no official meaning, but the common interpretation is that the green represents the Irish nationalist (Gaelic) tradition of Ireland; the orange represents  the Orange tradition (minority supporters of William of Orange); and the white symbolizes peace between the two traditions.

Fun fact: The Irish flag is similar to the flag of Cote d'Ivoire, which is shorter and has the colors reversed.

Did you know…

Ireland's national song is called "Amhran na bhFiann", but the song "Ireland's Call" is often used at sporting events where players from Ireland and Northern Ireland compete as a unified team.
